LPN Sheath Tech/Float – FTD Full Time

This position is responsible for assisting clinical team members by performing a variety of duties for patients within the patient-focused care system and under the direction/supervision of a physician/mid-level provider, registered nurse and/or licensed practical nurse. Assumes, under the direction of such, responsibility for patient arterial and venous sheath removal, urinary catheter insertion and removal, ABIs, peripheral IV insertion and removal, routine and venous specimen collection, 12 lead EKG, safe use of bladder scanner, defibrillator, vein finder, Doppler, and EKG machine, as well as other clerical duties to assist in the smooth operation of the department.

Primary Duties

Primary Functions:

  1. Monitors and performs vital signs using a variety of equipment and reports abnormalities/unanticipated changes to RN.
  2. Performs/assists in removal of arterial or venous sheath and applies manual pressure or c-clamp after hemostasis has been established.
  3. Observes sheath site for signs of bleeding and notifies RN of any changes.
  4. Ability to apply single dressings and to assist RN with more complex dressings.
  5. Performs/assists with other clinical skills such as urinary catheter insertion and removal, ABIs, peripheral IV insertion and removal, routine and venous specimen collection, safe use of bladder scanner, defibrillator, vein finder, Doppler, and EKG machine.
  6. Actively participates in administering patient care and ensures a safe and comforting environment.
  7. Responds to patients needs in a timely manner.
  8. Performs/assists with positioning patients and transferring patients (i.e., from wheelchair to exam table or bed; from bed to chair, wheelchair or stretcher). Transports patients as needed.
  9. Reports changes in condition to the nurse in a timely manner.
  10. Maintains personal responsibility for professional growth and development.
  11. Applies the knowledge of growth and development to appropriate patient populations.
  12. Maintains patient confidentiality.
  13. Maintains universal precautions.
  14. Performs other assigned duties as directed by Director/Assistant Director of Nursing based on demonstrated competency.

Technical Activities:

  1. Establishes patient setup/connection tasks including inputting patient specific data in electronic health record and EKG equipment.
  2. Demonstrates ability to perform 12 lead EKG.
  3. Monitors and performs vital signs using a variety of equipment, inputs data into electronic health record and reports abnormalities/unanticipated changes to nurse.
  4. Provides clerical support as needed.

Staff/Unit Responsibilities:

  8. Assumes a role in the maintenance of the patient-focused care delivery system.
  9. Provides services to the physicians, within his/her scope of practice.
  10. Supports the multi-skilled worker environment (i.e., cross training).
  11. Demonstrates willingness to staff other areas of the facility as needed.
  12. Assists with patient charges as necessary.
  13. Maintains knowledge of and confirms to facility policy and procedure.
  14. Ensures patient equipment and supplies are available and are in working condition.
  • Education: High school diploma or G.E.D. required.  Graduate of an accredited school of Licensed Practical Nursing.
  • Licensure/Certification: Licensed Practical Nurse or MA certification. BLS certification required within the first 30 days of employment. Basic EKG skills required within 6 months of employment. Certification is to be renewed by recommended renewal date on certification card.
  • Experience:   With MA diploma, MA certification or LPN, none required. Without MA diploma, MA certification or LPN degree, minimum of six (6) months continuous and recent patient care experience required, preferably in an acute care setting. Knowledge of EMR and ability to navigate EMR preferred.
